GVPF Young Hunter Program 2024

Date(s): August 3 - Sept 21, 2024

Hours: Vary depending on location (see youth hunter application for exact dates and times)

Event: Gallatin Valley Pheasants Forever Young Hunter Program

The Gallatin Valley Pheasants Forever Young Hunter Program is one of the best opportunities for youth in Montana to learn how to properly shoot a shotgun and hunt Pheasants & other game birds. It is spread over 5 Saturdays (1/2 day) and 2 evenings in August followed by a Youth Hunt in September. In the past, we have been able to provide a pheasant youth hunt behind highly trained pointers and skilled dog handlers in September for successful graduates of the program. The program provides instruction on Hunter safety, proper shooting form, wildlife conservation, bird habitat, bird species, bird dog types and how to care for them in the field, where and how to hunt, shotgun & ammo types and uses, proper care of guns, proper interaction with land owners and how to field dress wild birds.

Participants will learn to shoot trap, skeet and sporting clays. All guns, ammo, clays, ear/eye protection and instruction are provided free of charge.

We have room for 12 youth students between the ages of 11-15 who have successfully passed Hunter Safety Education course. Applications due by June 17th, 2024, selection begins in June. Participants and one parent or guardian are expected to attend all sessions.

If you have not completed a hunter safety course, you can find a hunter safety class near you here.

MSU Hunting Access

Reserving Hunting Access at the MSU College of Agriculture Springhill Experimental Farm

**If the rules are not followed, your hunt reservation will be cancelled. If you're unclear, call/text Rose.

The Gallatin Valley Chapter of Pheasants Forever has partnered with Montana State University College of Agriculture and Region 3 Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks to coordinate an online hunting reservation system for big game and upland bird hunting on the Springhill Experimental Farm through the generosity of local software provider Schedulicity.com.

Big Game Hunting : Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday

Upland Bird Hunting : Wednesday

Upland Bird Youth Hunting : Saturday

Read and follow the “Guide to the Online Reservation Process” below.

Review and sign a copy of the “MSU Springhill Farm Rules”. Located by clicking the green button at the bottom of this page. The statement needs to be signed, dated, hunters names included with ALS numbers and emailed to rosetimmer@gmail.com prior to your hunt.

Your confirmation from Schedulicity needs to be printed and on your dash for the duration of your hunt and left in the drop box onsite with the wildlife you saw during your hunt at your departure.

Hunts can be booked 2 weeks in advance.

While basic upland bird habitat is presently available on the Farm, we plan to work with MSU in improving the diversity and quality of cover types needed by upland game birds in the coming years.

Your cooperation in following the established rules and in using common sense and good (fair chase) hunting ethics when on the MSU property is necessary to help keep this land open to controlled public hunting. Have a fun and safe hunt!!

2023 Season dates: Upland bird (sharp-tailed grouse and Hungarian partridge) – September 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023. Ring-necked pheasant – October 7, 2023 to December 31, 2023.

Deer and Elk Season Dates: August 15, 2023 – February 15, 2024

Hunter access limited to 1 (one) each Upland Game Bird and 1 (one) each Big Game hunt/person/year.

GUIDE TO THE ONLINE RESERVATION PROCESS FOR HUNTING ACCESS AT THE MSU COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE’S SPRINGHILL EXPERIMENTAL FARM

Step 1. Click on the link provided (https://www.schedulicity.com/scheduling/MCO5LD) to go to the Schedulicty.com site to make a hunting reservation(s). The link will take you to the Schedulicity.com site we are using to schedule hunting access at the Farm. We’d like big game hunts to be reserved by one person/group as follows: Sunday-Tuesday and Thursday-Friday. We have no way to require this in our system so please book all days together.

Step 2. For purposes of the reservation system, big game hunting begins at 0600 and bird hunting at 0900. In practice, big game hunting begins at the legal hunting time of one-half hour before sunrise and upland bird hunting begins no earlier than 9 am, according to the rules established for the Experimental Farm.

Step 3. Please car pool to limit the number of vehicles used.

Step 4. Hunters must cancel a reservation that won’t be used at least 48 hours prior to the reservation to allow another hunter to make use of the date. Failure to do so may result in loss of hunting privileges at the Springhill Experimental Farm.

Once your reservation is confirmed, you will receive a confirmation message from Schedulicity.com. Print out the confirmation message and leave it on the dashboard of your vehicle in one of the two designated parking areas at the Farm. Write the names and ALS numbers of all hunters (max of 4) in the party on the printed message. When done hunting for the day, please leave the confirmation message in the drop box provided in the parking area. Please add a note or comment as to whether any game was observed and/or harvested to help us in adapting the hunting access program. We plan to improve upland game bird habitat on the Farm over time so comments on numbers seen and harvested is important to evaluate habitat needs and success in improving numbers.

Your adherence to good hunting ethics and the rules governing hunting access at the MSU Springhill Experimental Farm will go a long way toward keeping the property open to hunting in the future.

Thank you for your participation. Have a safe and enjoyable hunt.

Comments or questions can be sent to Rose Timmer, GVPF at rosetimmer@gmail.com or 406-581-1544.
